The National Black Boys Can Asociation was delighted to present the annual awards for 2006 at the Gala Ceremony held on Saturday 11th November 2006
The second National Black Boys Can Awards ceremony, held on Saturday 11th November 2006 at the National Motorcycle Museum near Birmingham has been expressed by many who attended as an "enormous success", "a credit to the black community".
Black Boys Can Award Winners 2006
School of the Year Award
Hamstead Hall Community Learning Centre School in Birmingham
This award recognises those schools within the UK who have been successful in raising the attainment level of Black Boys throughout their school. The presenter of this award on the evening was Dr Teeranlall Ramgopal Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of Stafford. Dr Ramgopal did his first degree at the Open University, his Masters at Warwick University and his Doctorate Degree at Manchester Metropolitan University
School Teacher of the Year Award
Mr Paul Wiltshire
Paul is is a business studies teacher at the City Academy in Harlesden London.
The teacher of the year award recognises those teachers who have successfully worked, often beyond their call of duty to actively raise the attainment and achievement level of Black boys. The presenter of this award on the evening was Gilroy Brown. Gilroy has over 30 years experience in Education, 10 of those as a Headmaster of a multi-cultural inner city primary school. He now serves as a School advisor for the Birmingham Advisory and Support Services and has done extensive research on successful school practices in raising the achievement of African Caribbean pupils.

This award recognises Black boys who have made a significant achievement in areas such as educational attainment, creative arts and community involvemet. The presenter of this award on the evening was Rev Carver Anderson DIPSW/CQSW Dip (Theo) MA Carver is the Managing Director of Shalom Consultancy, a national organisation that empowers families and youths through mediation, counselling, training and consultancy.

The Lord William Morris OJ Award
Sylvester Lewis
This award recognises boys who have participated in projects and community franchisees of the National Black Boys Can Association. Recognition is given to an outstanding boy who has shown all round improvement in his achievement since joining a Black Boys Can Programme. The presenter of this award on the evening was Bishop Wilton Powell OBE . Bishop Powell is the National Overseer for the Church of God of Prophecy
Special Recognition Award

This award recognises outstanding individuals or organisations that have made a significant contribution to unleashing the educational potential of Black boys. The presenter of this award on the evening was Rob Marris MP. Rob is a qualified solicitor and was elected MP for Wolverhampton South West in 2001. Rob Marris MP has shown his commitment to plight of black boys and their underachievement in England by becoming one of first MP in the UK to become a member of the National Black Boys Association, offering his service to the organisation in whatever capacity the organisation may require.
Franchisees of the Year Award
Small Heath Black Boys Can
This award recognises community franchisees and partnership projects of National Black Boys Can Association. Recognition is given to the most innovative, progressive and visionary community franchisee/projects for the invaluable work done during the past year. The presenters of this award were Jeannette Veira and Gwen Daley. Jeannette started her career as a science teacher. She currently holds the position of Senior Strategic manager in Bristol City Council Children and young people's service. Gwen is a local JP and the founder and chairperson of Coventry Black Boys Can project.
Parent of the Year Award

This award recognises parents and guardians of Black boys who are able to demonstrate a strong degree of commitment and determination to see their sons achieve social and academic success. The presenter of this award on the evening was Shaunice Duffus. Shaunice is the Community Development Involvement Manager for Southwark Council in London
Volunteers of Distinction

For volunteering his services for every major event that the National Black Boys Can has hosted.
Vira Byfield
For volunteering her services and providing meals for all our training events, community franchise events and even the national conference where she, along with Gwendolyn Daley catered for over 1000 delegates.
George Bennett
Known as Zorro, for providing recording studios services for us, virtually free of charge, and rising to all the challenges we presented him.
Volunteers of distinction award recognises volunteers who have made significant contributions to any of the projects or community franchisees within the Black Boys Can network. The presenter of this award on the evening was Rev Rueben King from the New Testament Church.
