This Partnership between the National Black Boys Can Association and Education On... Ltd has been formed for the advancement of Black boys and girls.
National Black Boys Can Association
The National Black Boys Can Association is a community led, not-for-profit, entity operating under the legal status of a company Limited by Guarantee. It was established in 1999 for Charitable Benevolent and Philanthropic purposes. Under the patronage of the Rt Hon Lord William Morris, the organisation aims to raise the academic and social aspirations of Black Boys between the ages of 9-16 by:
- Empowering Black boys, primarily through the provision of an effective personal development programme.
- Empowering the parents of Black boys, primarily by up-skilling them to enable them to provide effective support to their sons.
- Empowering local communities to run their own "Black Boys Projects" in their own localities.
- Working in partnership with mainstream education.
The organisation has:
- Supported the development of a growing network of Black boys Can projects throughout the country, operating through our innovative community Franchise structure.
- Supported the development of a number of school based Black Boys Can projects.
- Established effective partnerships with universities to run university based Black boys Can Projects, including the University of Oxford and the University of Birmingham to increase the access of Black boys to universities.
- Produced a series of parent’s handbooks including the "Help Your Children to Learn… information for African Caribbean Parents" on the behalf of the Department for Education and Skills, and our own publications ‘Raising our Sons for Success’ and ‘Empowering Black Parents to Empower their Sons’.
- Developed and delivered teachers training programmes to schools.
- Worked in partnership with Local Education Authorities to work with schools and community groups.
- Hosted National Conferences and National Awards.
- Gained wide ranging media support at both local and national level for the educational advancement of Black Boys.
- Gained national credibility and become an authority in the field of empowerment programmes for "hard to reach" underachieving Black Boys and their parents.
In addition, the organisation is actively involved in lobbying to effect change in national educational and related policies that can bring about positive change in the education of Black boys. We have:
- Been chosen to be one of the 11 national strategic Partners with the Department for Communities and Local Government.
- Been consulted on the development and review of a number of educational policies, including for example, the exclusion of Back Boys, racial equality and social exclusion.
- Presented our consultation paper in November 2003 to MP’s at the Houses of Commons, outlining future proposals for the key stage 4 national strategies and paving the way for future consultations.
- Participated in the Home Office’s Reach working party.
- Participated in the Centre for Social Justice working party.

Education On…Ltd is a “not-for-profit" Company Limited by Guarantee with Charitable Benevolent and Philanthropic purposes only. Its main aims are to provide educational resources, training materials and consultancy to advance the well being and academic attainment of underachieving pupils in the UK and overseas.
The objects of the Company are:
- To develop and promote good practice educational models in local, regional, national and international arenas to enhance the educational development of individuals.
- To work in partnership with existing educational providers and policy makers to enhance the educational achievements of individuals.
- To provide training, advice and support to all, irrespective of their gender, race or social class, particularly targeting disadvantaged, underachieving and socially excluded individuals.
Education On…Ltd is currently pioneering the WISE BOYS programme in the UK.
This programme is directed towards boys from all sectors and cultures within the UK but focuses predominantly on boys from areas of high socio-economic exclusion in inner city conurbations where there is the greatest need. The WISE Boys programme aims are to raise the academic achievements and social fulfilment of underachieving boys to their full potential thereby contributing to a more cohesive society. The Department for Skills and education have identified that in 2005, boys significantly underachieved in their GCSEs in comparison to their girl peers. This was particularly noted in those wards identified by the former Office for the Deputy Prime Minister as target areas for the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme.
Education On…Ltd also has an international dimension and is currently delivering a new programme for underachieving pupils in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and has recently initiated a further three projects in Ghana.
Using the proven model, Education On…Ltd has developed a programme which engages all of the key stakeholders, namely, the pupils, the Parents, The Communities and The Educationalists.
